Visy Launches Plastic Free Labelling System for Fresh Produce

Visy has introduced a cardboard and paper labelling system that helps fresh produce growers reduce single use plastic. The new Enviropunnet solution is designed to work with existing packing lines and support easier recycling.

On 25th August 2026, Visy launched a new labelling system in Australia that aims to reduce plastic in fresh produce packaging. The system uses cardboard flaps and a paper label to close produce packs. The solution is part of Visy’s Enviropunnet range. It is designed for apples, pears, stone fruit and tomatoes. Visy says the technology can help growers and supermarkets move towards simpler and more recyclable packaging.

New System Uses Cardboard and Paper

Visy’s Enviropunnet overclose system secures produce with folded cardboard flaps. A paper label keeps the pack closed. The system supports different pack sizes. These include 1kg and 750g formats, plus a 500g to 1kg tray for premium apples. The labels use food-safe adhesives. They can have adhesive-free areas to prevent contact with exposed produce. Optional date coding and custom printing are also available.

Designed for Existing Packing Lines

One useful feature is that the system can be retrofitted into existing packing lines. Growers do not need additional conveyors to start using it. For fresh produce companies, packaging changes can be difficult. New equipment can require money, time and space. A system that works with existing lines may reduce some challenges. The amount of plastic saved will depend on the punnet size and the flow wrap being replaced. Visy expects the system to reduce single-use plastic use.

Recyclability Adds Another Benefit

The Enviropunnet is made through Visy’s Australian supply network. The board is produced in Wodonga, and the punnets are assembled in Shepparton. After use, the punnets can be placed in kerbside recycling. The recovered fibre can be used to make new cardboard packaging. Visy Group general manager Chris Van Der Merwe said the system allows fresh produce to be packed without plastic film or wrap.

Supporting Sustainable Packaging

 The launch comes as retailers and consumers look for ways to reduce packaging waste. Fresh produce has traditionally used plastic film and other materials to protect products during transport and sale. Visy’s system offers another option. This matters because fresh produce needs packaging that can protect food while meeting environmental expectations. Retailers need to reduce plastic while keeping packs practical and easy to handle. Visy is trying to address both needs with one format.

The system can also support a smoother move away from flow wrapping. This may help growers change packaging without rebuilding their operation. Visy has a long history in packaging. The company was founded in 1948 by Leon Pratt, who developed cardboard boxes as an alternative to heavier wooden crates used for moving apples. Today, Visy employs about 7,000 people across 150 sites.

This approach could become useful as packaging rules and retailer sustainability goals continue to change. The new system shows how packaging companies are trying to reduce plastic without giving up product protection. Sometimes, a small change in how a pack is closed can have a wider impact.
