In January 2025, Mondi collaborated with Biedronka in a closed-loop venture to distribute, collect, and recycle its corrugated packing coordinated with the vender’s plastic consumption and CO2 emission goals. The resulting paper is then transported to one of the six Polish workshops of Mondi, where it is twisted into corrugated cardboard packing such as fruit and vegetable crates. Biedronka’s dealers utilize this packing to wrap their products and deliver them to logistics centres, and from there, to supplies. This corrugated cardboard is left on the shelf as customers buy goods in their distinct packets. Once vacant, the cardboard is returned to Biedronka’s supply centres, where Mondi gathers it and returns it to the Świecie crusher for the procedure to start again. The partners expect that this programme will lift such sustainability creativities as zero waste while complying with the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation and other supervisory regulations in the EU.
Biedronka’s sustainability roadmap comprises goals to decrease plastic usage by 10% by 2025 against the 2018 reference point, and to lesser CO2 releases by 10% by 2026 from a 2021 baseline. The chief account manager in Mondi’s Corrugated Solutions team, Mateusz Buchowiecki, expressed, “By working closely with our partners throughout the value chain, we are setting a new standard for sustainability that not only complies with EU regulations but also paves the way for scalable solutions across Europe. This partnership demonstrates our shared commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation in sustainable practices.” Sustainability and ESC director at Biedronka, Agnieszka Koc, added, “At Biedronka, sustainability is a key priority, and our collaboration with Mondi marks a major milestone in our environmental journey. This closed-loop programme allows us to strategically adjust our use of virgin material and enhance our recycling efforts.”
