Tetra Pak Launched First Carton Packaging with Certified Recycled Polymer in India

In February 2025, Tetra Pak launched packaging resources integrating certified recycled polymers in India and became the first Indian company to do so for the food and beverage packaging industry. These carton packaging is certified by ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification), which contains 5% certified recycled polymers and aligns with the Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change’s Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules 2022.

Carton packaging, a global term in the packing sector, refers to a box or container made up of paperboard, which is commonly known as carton board. Tailored to fulfil specific product needs, carton packaging has observed noteworthy development, determined by the rising requirement for effective and reliable packaging solutions.

Tetra Pak is Sweden Swedish-origin multinational food processing and packaging company, and it’s headquartered in Switzerland. Managing Director of Tetra Pak South Asia, Cassio Simoes, expressed pride in pioneering the launch of packaging cartons with certified recycled polymers in India. He emphasized that the recycled resource is sourced from local areas, with production happening at the company’s ISCC PLUS-certified facility in Chakan, Pune. Simoes also mentioned the Ministry’s active attitude in influencing circularity, making India one of the first countries to impose such regulations by 2025. He highlighted the necessity for industry-wide partnership to fast-track the evolution to sustainable packaging resolutions.

The ISCC PLUS-certified recycled polymers are utilized in the packaging following the Tetra Pak, the ISCC mass balance credit process. Through chemical reusing, plastics are preserved from an amalgamation of virgin and recycled resources, with the recycled process sensibly tracked in the distribution process. These chemically recycled materials meet worldwide food safety standards and deliver the same quality as conventional fossil-based plastics. By incorporating recycled resources, Tetra Pak goals to boost recycling charges and improve the economic feasibility of recycling, strengthening a circular economy method.
