The milestone installation at CCEP’s Moorabbin production facility in Victoria marks an exciting step forward in the company’s sustainability journey. Officially launched on 5 November, the initiative was developed in partnership with Return-It, the east zone network operator for Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS VIC).
This world-first Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) aims to make recycling more visible, accessible, and convenient, not only for CCEP employees but also for the local community surrounding the site. Beyond serving as a regional sustainability effort, the project marks the first phase of a broader nationwide rollout of RVMs across CCEP’s manufacturing network, reinforcing the company’s commitment to building a more circular, environmentally responsible future.
Speaking at the occasion, CCEP Australia managing director Orlando Rodriguez said the launch signaled the company’s ongoing commitment to circularity and accessibility. “This is the first ever Reverse Vending Machine connected on a CCEP site, not only within Australia, but universal,” he told guests. “It’s small, but it’s representative and it signifies how we can support generating an ease of substructure that permits Australians to do the right thing.”
Rodriguez noted that while ampule deposit schemes have made significant progress in collecting beverage ampules consumed at home, the next important challenge lies in improving away-from-home recovery rates.
“After 50 years of exertion, about two-thirds of what’s formed in Australia is collected. The other third still goes to landfill, and that’s not through a lack of exertion; it’s about substructure and availability,” he expressed. “We require simplistic, convenient resolutions that make it calmer for people to recycle when they’re away from home.”
Spotting Australia’s gathering point gap compared to worldwide leaders, Rodriguez added: “Usually, we have about one of these [RVMs] for every 15,000 Australians. In Scandinavia, it’s 1 in 350-400 people. So, in a much larger land mass like ours, we need to think productively about how to scale up admittance.”
Following Moorabbin, the next RVM will be installed at Northmead (NSW), with additional rollouts strategic at CCEP’s Richlands (QLD) and Kewdale (WA) sites. Also speaking at the event, Geoff Parker, CEO of the Australian Beverages Council, praised the partnership between CCEP and Return-It as an example of business leadership in action.
