World-First Food-Grade Recycled Plastic Innovation Set to Transform Grocery Packaging

The Preveted Ocean Plastic program, based in the UK, and its industry partners proudly introduced safe, recycled polypropylene that meets sustainability requirements and European Union food safety standards. Despite polypropylenes widespread use, its global recycling rate remains dismally low at just 1%. The new product will have a strong, positive impact in its first year by avoiding the production of around 500 million polypropylene cups, which would otherwise clog the ocean and degrade its purity.

Food-grade polypropylene is said to be safer than other plastics, earning a thumbs-up from the US Food and Drug Administration for use in products like yoghurt containers. The material for the new plastic will be gathered and processed into food-grade recycled polypropylene by PETMAN, using Starlinger Viscotec technology located in the center of East Borneo, Indonesia.

A technology and recycling expert at Innovia, Neil Hudson, said,

“For Innovia, a way of EU food contact-approved polypropylene from a typical mechanical recovered post-consumer source is a transformation and a unique way. We will now make films for flexible and label packaging in the food and beverage market and support the best for sustainability and circularity.”

Plastic pollution remains a pressing global issue, extending far beyond fluctuating consumer behavior. Each year, 21 to 25 million tons of plastic end up in waterways, with up to 2,000 garbage trucks of plastic dumped daily. If this food-safe, recycled-plastic solution receives official approval, it could significantly reduce microplastics and plastic pollution in our water systems.

Using less hazardous plastics in packaging, especially food packaging, keeps food, health, and the environment safe. The POP Founder, Raffi Schieir, said, “This is the best and first-ever moment for ocean plastic prevention. This is evidence that the Prevented Ocean Plastic franchise model can resolve the crucial plastic collection issues on a massive scale without compromising dignity.”

The Prevented Ocean Plastic has been establishing a scalable franchise model, supported by Danone Aqua, for plastic collection. It is engineered to help reduce pollution and fuel job growth in disturbed coastal communities.
