Global packaging leader Smurfit Westrock today announced the opening of its HORIZON facility, billed as the world’s first packaging plant solely dedicated to pharmaceutical patient-medication adherence, regulated pharma packaging and clinical trial support. With an investment exceeding €40 million, the site emphasises end-to-end packaging solutions that centre on the patient experience.
Located adjacent to Dublin Airport, the facility houses a 170-strong team of highly skilled designers, operators and support functions and features an Experience Centre designed to enable client co-creation and interactive demonstrations of capabilities. Moreover, HORIZON will operate under the company’s Adherence & Clinicals (SWA&C) division and follow the same operational model as the company’s sister sites in China (Kunshan) and the US (Mebane) enabling seamless global support for clients.
Cutting-edge capabilities include cold-chain testing, electronics assembly testing, and single-source solutions designed to accelerate speed-to-market not just for clients, but ultimately for patients. Through HORIZON, Smurfit Westrock is shifting from simply providing packaging containers towards offering comprehensive systems that support patient adherence, dosage tracking, clinical-trial logistics and high-regulation environments.
This strategic leap comes at a time when the pharmaceutical packaging landscape is under intensified pressure: regulatory demands are rising, patient-centricity is non-negotiable, and the need for global consistency across markets is more critical than ever.
