Amcor Drives Sustainability with New Packaging for Alter Eco Chocolate Bars

Packaging solutions company Amcor has teamed up with organic food brand Alter Eco to introduce a more sustainable packaging approach for its chocolate products. Through this collaboration, Amcor has developed recyclable paper-based packaging that not only supports eco-friendly practices but also reduces the overall packaging weight by an impressive 61%. This initiative reflects a growing focus on sustainability in the food and packaging industries, aiming to minimize environmental impact while maintaining the quality and appeal of Alter Eco’s chocolate range.

As part of its broader procurement and sustainability goals, Alter Eco recognized packaging as a key area for improvement. The project focuses on replacing the brand’s existing cardboard sleeves and inner aluminum foil wraps with a unified, paper-based solution. To achieve this, Amcor collaborated closely with Alter Eco and HALBA, a Swiss chocolate specialist and co-packer, to transition the chocolate packaging to AmFiber Performance Paper, delivering a more sustainable and streamlined alternative.

The shift to AmFiber, Amcor’s recyclable paper-based packaging solution, came with several technical challenges during development. One particular chocolate bar proved difficult because the inclusion of almonds created a textured surface, which made it harder to achieve a smooth, premium look. Alter Eco required the new packaging to retain a high-quality, sleek appearance for consumers, a goal successfully met through the application of AmFiber material.

The redesigned packaging also provides effective protection against environmental factors such as water vapor and grease, ensuring the chocolate and its outer packaging remain safe. Janice Narainsamy, Senior Product Development Engineer at Amcor, noted, “Paper-based packaging combines strong shelf appeal with a well-established perception of sustainability.”

With the right barrier properties, paper-based packaging can provide the protection required for demanding products like chocolate,” said Janice Narainsamy. She added, “Alter Eco’s switch to AmFiber Performance Paper showcases this in a real-world setting, achieving a notable reduction in packaging weight while maintaining product quality and shelf appeal.”

The new packaging design delivers up to a 61% reduction in weight compared to Alter Eco’s previous pack, a change that could positively impact downstream logistics and lower freight costs. The material is also fully recyclable within France’s paper recycling stream, supporting circular economy initiatives. Amcor’s AmFiber portfolio, including the Performance Paper used for Alter Eco, provides paper-based packaging solutions for a wide range of industries. Each product in the range incorporates tailored technologies to ensure the necessary barrier properties, shelf life, and machine performance required to meet the specific needs of different brands and products.
