Amcor Joins City-Scale Reusable Packaging Initiative to Promote Sustainability

Australian packaging company Amcor is supporting an innovative city-wide packaging reuse initiative set to launch in Ottawa, Canada. The Reuse City Canada Project, a collaboration between the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF), Reposit, and leading retailers and brands, aims to allow consumers to buy, return, and reuse everyday products across multiple stores. Starting in Q3 2026, the project will test how large-scale reuse systems can operate in a way that is convenient for consumers, practical for businesses, and capable of generating valuable insights to guide similar initiatives in other cities and markets.

Participating retailers and brands include Loblaw, L’Oréal, P&G, Shoppers Drug Mart, Superstore, Unilever, Walmart Canada, and Your Independent Grocer. The initiative is supported by solution partners such as Amcor and Avery Dennison, along with Canadian circular economy collaborators Circulr and IBM.

Shoppers will be capable of purchasing selected everyday products, comprising personal care and home care products, in durable, reusable packaging at participating stores, with a small refundable deposit. Once the product is utilized, the empty packaging can be refunded at chosen in-store return points, after which it will be collected, professionally cleaned, and put back into circulation for recycling.

Reposit, which projects and functions reuse systems that make an effort at scale, is the delivery partner for the scheme, accountable for system project, build, and day-to-day processes. The project will include common return points, reverse logistics, expert washing substructure, and combined data systems, as well as clear, standardized return messaging in both French and English. The project’s pattern is intended to decrease friction for customers while allowing participating businesses to test a shared method to reuse within the present retail surroundings.

Reuse is envisioned to accompany other circular solutions, comprising recycling, by decreasing reliance on single-use packaging for designated everyday products, while continuing to help existing recycling systems for packaging that cannot be reused. Corporate Sustainability director at Amcor, Larissa Sakamoto, expressed, “Amcor is proud to link this city-wide reusable packing partnership alongside main brands and retailers to test reuse structures at scale. Corporations like these will be main to unlocking meaningful growth and, eventually, driving a circular economy for packaging.”
