Pantone has revealed an innovative artificial intelligence tool that could reshape packaging designers’ approach to color selection and creative exploration.
The Pantone Palette Generator, announced in beta form in early November, signifies a noteworthy leap forward in strategy technology by uniting Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI abilities with Pantone’s six decades of color proficiency. This chat-based border works within Pantone Connect, the corporation’s digital platform that serves as a global center for design specialists.
The advanced tool highlights a serious pain point in the planning process: the time-consuming research and inspiration phase that precedes real creative work. Instead of physically browsing thousands of color choices, designers can now engage in natural conversations with the AI assistant, asking questions such as “What colors evoke confidence in Gen Z?” or “Palettes encouraged by 1970s fashion editorials.”
The Palette Generator enticements from a widespread dataset generated by Pantone’s Color Institute, which comprises color scientists, psychologists, and trend forecasters. This wealth of knowledge, gathered over decades of study in color psychology and universal trend analysis, is now immediately available through informal AI.
“For over 60 years, Pantone has authorized creatives to make color-critical choices through their design procedure positively,” clarifies Sky Kelley, Pantone’s president. “By working together with Microsoft, we desired to generate a tool that supports jumpstart the study, discovery, and stimulus phase of the design procedure.”
Technology influences Retrieval-Augmented Generation and agentic technology to search Pantone’s Color Insider articles and trend-predicting data semantically. This confirms that produced palettes aren’t just aesthetically attractive but are also grounded in scientific research and market visions.
Built on Microsoft’s inclusive technology stack, comprising Azure Cosmos DB, Azure AI Foundry, and Azure AI Search, the option prioritizes security and scalability while preserving seamless cross-platform incorporation. The platform supports multiple languages and provides a foundation for future AI-assisted projects.
