Mondi has cooperated with Prymat, a Polish dried seasoning producer, to develop paper-based packaging that prevents its aromatic spices. The packaging is generated with Mondi’s re/cycle FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate. This ultra-high barrier option was selected after trials and tests and aims to help as a substitute for predictably non-recyclable multilayer constructions. Adrian Goralski, managing director at Mondi Solec, expresses: “It is important to understand the individual requirements of each customer when manufacturing packaging solutions. There are often numerous different routes to sustainability.”
“At Mondi, we work closely with brands to systematically learn about every step of their production, delivery, and end use, so that we can generate and test several options and be sure we are offering the best possible and most sustainable outcome.” According to Mondi’s product impression assessment tool, FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate has a CO2 impact that is “significantly” lesser than the predictable multilayer plastic or aluminum-based options.
FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate comprises at least 80% paper and a practical barrier coating improved for recycling. It is recognized to be recyclable according to the Confederation of European Paper Industries’ recyclability laboratory test process. Marta Klęka-Nowa, PR manager at Prymat, expresses: “Prymat, as a leading producer of spices and food seasonings, has reliably sought solutions to changeover from multi-layer packaging to recyclable resources.”

The FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate is expressed to offer “excellent, long-lasting protection” against water vapor, oxygen, and grease, with an oxygen broadcast rate below 0.5 cm3/m2d and water vapor show rate below 0.5 g/m2d, protecting the spices’ aroma and taste.
Mondi’s FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate is also planned for superior-quality printing results that enhance the shelf presence of Prymat’s spice variety. According to the company, the level of stiffness offers a “very good dead fold, allowing the end user to fold the pack after first utilize to close it, and it will remain intact.”
The new packaging is well-suited to existing filling lines at Prymat, removing the requirement for investment in machinery.
