Clariant Achieves EU Commission Approval for Renewable Rice Bran Wax Additives in Food-Contact Plastics

The European Commission has approved its renewable rice bran wax additives for food-contact plastics with a regulatory standard. This authorization, based on the European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) positive safety assessment, positions Clariant's Licocare RBW product line as a sustainable solution for the European plastics industry.

Segment manager Additives at Clariant, Diederik Goyvaerts, stated that achieving the EU Commission approval, which is based on the EFSA recommendation for our Licocare rice bran wax additives, represents years of dedicated work and demonstrates Clariant's commitment to delivering sustainable solutions that meet the highest regulatory standards.

The EU Commission approval covers the Licocare RBW 100-300 series, including Licocare RBW 360 Vita and Licocare RBW 560 Vita. This enables Clariant to use these additives at up to 0.3% in polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polylactic acid (PLA), and rigid polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials and articles intended for contact with non-fatty foods.

According to Towards Packaging, the Sustainable food storage market is projected to experience significant growth, with estimates suggesting the market size will increase from USD 121.5 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 240.85 billion by 2035, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.9% from 2026 to 2035. Growth is driven by the increasing demand for precise liquid dispensing with rising consumer emphasis on hygiene and product accuracy, driving adoption in the personal care sector. Innovations in ergonomic design and material strength are enhancing user safety and efficiency. It prioritizes accurate liquid dispensing, especially in healthcare, personal care, and laboratory environments.
