Avantium and Packamama Collaborate to Advance Eco-Friendly Wine Packaging Solutions

Packamama is internationally known for its lightweight, shatterproof, and completely recyclable bottles, which significantly decrease carbon emissions compared to traditional glass bottles. The company’s distinguishing flat-pack bottle pattern optimizes space efficacy in transport and storage, further decreasing emissions across the supply chain.

Now made from 100% recycled PET (rPET), Packamama’s bottles support circularity and sustainability in the wine industry. With the outline of releaf®, Packamama takes sustainable invention in wine packaging to another level. Releaf® suggests a unique sustainability advantage: it is plant-based, recyclable, and offers a significantly lower carbon footprint than traditional resources such as glass or conventional, virgin plastics. Beyond its ecological benefits, Releaf® provides excellent barrier properties that prevent wine quality, making it a suitable choice for premium, sustainable packaging.

To help this growth, Packamama has secured an AU$1 million grant from the Australian government. This grant, which Avantium helped secure, was awarded under the Business Research and Innovation Initiative (BRII) and offered to support Packamama’s efforts to decarbonize Australian wine packaging. This international identity and governmental help underscore the rising global interest in sustainable wine packaging options.

Packamama is thrilled to partner with Avantium to bring the plant-based polymer Releaf® into our wine bottle resolutions,” expressed Santiago Navarro, CEO & Founder at Packamama. “We have been searching for a resource that fulfils our performance standards and sustainability needs and is made from plants. We believe that Releaf® provides a unique mixture of high performance, ecological responsibility, and attractive customer messaging.”

Bineke Posthumus, Commercial Director at Avantium, expressed: “Packamama’s advanced approach to wine packaging and commitment to sustainability make them a suitable partner for Avantium. Their decision to adopt and test Releaf® is a strong endorsement of our material’s potential to change to iconic, premium packaging usages. We look forward to working closely with Packamama to influence meaningful progress in sustainable packaging.”

Packamama is a climate tech company progressing wine packaging for a less-carbon future. Our multi-award-winning, eco-friendly bottles, manufactured from our unique resource mix of recycled PET and performance-improving additives, save space, weight, and energy, slashing releases by more than half compared to traditional glass bottles. Built for a circular economy, Packamama is emerging with a broader portfolio of environmentally friendly packaging inventions to support transforming the wine industry.
