Avient Corp, a leading innovative material company, announced the launch of an oxygen-scavenging additive, which is specifically designed to enhance the recyclability of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging and extend the shelf life of the products.
ColorMatrix Amosorb oxyloop-1 is the first grade new portfolio of the company, which has received the endorsement of the European platform for bottle packaging for bottle-to-bottle recyclability in the colored recycled stream.
The new formulation is non-nylon based and fully compatible with recycled PET, which makes it suitable for brands to include a higher percentage of recycled materials in their product packaging.
Antonello Decortes, global product platform manager at Avient, said, "This new Oxyloop technology represents a significant step forward in our commitment to sustainability and circularity." He further mentioned that "By enhancing the recyclability of PET packaging, we are helping brand owners and converters achieve their sustainability goals and reduce their environmental impact."
The inclusion of the new additive can maintain the oxygen-scavenging performance even in situations where the packaging contains up to 100 recycled PET content. This has enabled its application in various products like vitamin drinks, juices, ready-to-drink teas, and other dairy products, which raises the requirement for higher shelf-life and freshness for a longer period.
Avient believes that this has managed to deliver advanced bottle clarity, which can now also be adopted in monolayer and multiplayer bottle structures. The nylon-free formulation helps in minimizing yellowing in the recycling stream of the clean bottle.
The new additive also meets the food contact regulatory requirements across major markets around the world, which provides a green chit to the manufacturing and the consumers about its safety and compliance.
Avient’s innovation is a breakthrough in the current packaging industry, as the regulatory bodies are also emphasizing maintaining the packaging recyclable and suited for food and beverage applications.
