The two-year experiment, recognized as RePlay, will start in September at New World Metro Willis Street in Wellington and New World Birkenhead in Auckland. Established in association with Bonson Packaging and co-funded by the Ministry for the Environment, RePlay will allow consumers to purchase deli products in reusable vessels with a modest tap of their debit card or phone. There will be no open charge to participate, just an impermanent USD 3 hold that’s unrestricted when the vessel is reimbursed to a smart container in store within four weeks.

A consumer purchases fresh salad from the deli. The deli squad chooses a RePlay container, scans its exclusive QR code, and fills it with salad. The consumer swipes their card or phone at the counter of the deli to ‘borrow’ the RePlay container. This makes a temporary clutch of USD 3 per container. The consumer then recompenses for the salad at the counter with any additional foodstuffs just as they generally would. Once the ampule is unfilled, the consumer solutions and revenues it to the supply’s RePlay smart bin. The smart bin recites the QR code and announcements the USD 3 hold.

If they’re late returning the ampule, Bonson will cost them USD 3 to refill their supply of vessels, but they can get a limited repayment of USD 1 if they return it within a time limit of six months. In its place, supermarkets buy and refill single-use ampules, Bonson materials, a slew of RePlay returnable ampules, maintained by the ‘Tap to RePlay’ and smart bin skill. This arrangement is intended to keep wrapping in flow at high value rather than being downcycled.

A main share of the experiment is educating how many reuse cycles the RePlay vessels can attain, and considerate the client return amount, both serious issues in designing a climbable, high-accomplishment explanation.

General Manager of Bonson Packaging, Rodney Bennett, expressed,

“After two years of R&D, we’re very excited to trial the RePlay Returnable system in New World supermarkets. By working alongside local partners Circularity, Again Again, Anew, and New World, we have co-designed a world-leading circular system right here in Aotearoa, New Zealand. While other brands and retailers have trialled reuse initiatives, none have yet cracked the challenge of making it work at scale. We believe RePlay has real potential because it’s built on a circular business model packaging as a service using food-grade, durable polypropylene.”
