Parkside, an England-based packaging company, partnered with Riverford, the UK’s organic vegetable box delivery company, to announce the launch of new recyclable packaging solutions. The new packaging innovation includes the use of kerbside-recyclable paper-based material, vertical form-fill seal, and also provides robust moisture and grease resistance with the inclusion of advanced water-based coatings.

The packaging innovation also ensures the root vegetables of Riverford are fresh from the farm and delivered to the consumers. The main motive of the packaging material is to provide advanced durability, offering high tensile strength and resistance to tearing due to the weight.

Matt Mountfield, head of procurement at Riverford, said, “Working with Parkside on this project has been seamless from start to finish. Their technical knowledge and innovative approach enabled a brand-new paper-based design for our root vegetable packaging, suitable for automated form filling. The result is a design that perfectly meets our sustainability goals, improving efficiency and delivering the quality that our customers expect.”

The company also emphasized its durability, operational efficiency, and recyclability, which make the packaging credible for high-strength packaging applications. It shifted its 100gsm paper sacks to a 90 gsm VFFS-compatible paper, representing a material saving, and represents their commitment towards reducing resource use in every manufacturing step.

The change in material has also highly benefited the company’s line performance, with an increase in packing speed from 25 to 35 packs per minute. This adoption is expected to support greater operational efficiency and reduce energy consumption.

The printed design of Riverford’s packaging also enhances its brand appeal due to the appealing look of the kraft paper used in the bag. Parkside also stated that the flexo printing and reprographics capability has enabled high-quality all-over printing. This helps in combining a rustic appearance with a combination of clean printing on the coated materials.
