An established solution with satisfied consumers in Europe, Sonoco’s new Paper Can, featuring a paper bottom, is an award-winning paper vessel designed to fulfill the varied packaging requirements of contemporary brands.
Available in North America and designed with a strong emphasis on functionality and sustainability, Sonoco’s new Paper Can with a paper bottom is constructed from 100% recycled fiber, with up to 90% sourced from post-consumer resources. Engineered for recyclability, the new Paper Can has successfully passed repulpability and recyclability testing at Western Michigan University, meaning that brands utilizing Sonoco’s all-paper container solution can provide customers with packaging that's easy to recycle.
Sonoco’s paper-bottomed can is intended with recycling in mind and prequalified for the How2Recycle® ‘Check Locally’ label to make recycling as modest as possible for customers. It’s also an award winner, having received the 2024 PAC Global Best in Class Award for Sustainable Package Design Package Circularity.
European consumers have already been relishing the profits of the new Paper Can, mainly for products like pet food, powdered beverages, and snacks. International tea and herbal drinks company Twinings & Co. is an example. The company designated the can for its new powdered drink, Twinings Thé Latté, which was introduced to the French market in May 2024.
In selecting Sonoco’s Paper Can, Twinings & Co. cited its design for easy recyclability, its use of recycled paper fiber, water-based inks, and adhesives, and its performance and durability, which safeguard long-term product cleanliness.
Having just shown and engaged with brands at Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, Sonoco is in discussions with a number of North American converters and brands interested in maximizing the circularity and recyclability of their products. “At Sonoco, we appreciate that food & beverage brands are progressively looking for packaging that shows and backs up their broader commitment to sustainability and set circularity,” expresses Elizabeth Rhue, VP and General Manager, Sonoco Rigid Paper Containers North America. “Our paper cans offer a suitable combination of form, function, and recyclability, offering a packaging resolution that fulfills customer expectations for environment-friendly options without bargaining on product shield or shelf appeal.”
