On 27th May 2025, UCIMA and VDMA together held a meeting with the European Commission and several Members of the European Parliament to prioritise the strategy for the development of the packaging industry. This partnership brings together the two globally leading countries in the packaging technology business, united by a common vision on affordability, sustainability, and business policy. This meeting was a crucial chance to highlight the major role of European corporations in the digital and ecological evolution, while accenting the requirement to safeguard supervisory and market situations that do not challenge their affordability, especially given the current uncertainty in global markets.
UCIMA President, Riccardo Cavanna, expressed, “Dialogue with European institutions is more strategic today than ever. Our sector is ready to contribute to the sustainable transition of industry, but we need a regulatory framework that fosters innovation, protects competitiveness, and reduces bureaucratic burdens. The technological neutrality of our solutions makes European know-how an excellence, and it is our duty to protect it so that this period of great uncertainty does not erode it.” While discussing the aims of sustainability, UCIMA and VDMA focused on the status of safeguarding technological impartiality, realistic changeover time, and coordination among Member States, so that the revised rules do not become a hindrance to development.
Chairman of the VDMA Food Processing and Packaging Machinery Association, Christian Traumann, said, “With a 66 percent share of global trade, the European food processing and packaging machinery industry plays a crucial role in supplying the world’s population with food. More than 250,000 people in Europe work in this industry, with the USA being the largest single sales market.” The firmness of a detailed and appropriate discussion on U.S. rates was repeated, as they could significantly harm European exportations. The two associations entitled to the Commission to focus on maintaining a clear stance that supports companies instead refrain from taking direct trade retaliation during this unstable time.
