Wine GB Introduces its Sustainable Packaging Toolkit

June 2, 2025

Wine Great Britain (GB) launched their sustainable packaging toolkit as a part of World Environment Day. The new launch showcases their unwavering commitment to sustainability in wineries and vineyards. The toolkit is a major launch in the industry, which helps the operators to understand the impact of their decisions through a series of guidance documents, helping them to comply with industry standards and choose suitable packaging solutions.

The CEO of Wine GB, Nicola Bates, said that their sustainable packaging toolkit enables Welsh and English wine producers, which helps in making more informed choices about the packaging according to their requirements for their businesses. “It's crucial to keep the members informed so they can be ahead of any major changes in the legislation. The toolkit is a one-stop shop for what is required now and what will be required in the future,” he added.

Bafour Winery’s director, Fergus Elias, also mentioned that the packaging toolkit is a well-put-together document that is clear, thorough, and accessible. The toolkit also includes technical details which is useful without tipping into overwhelm. “The producers in the sustainable journey will find it helpful”, he added.

Wine GB said that the glass production requires significant energy use and it also leads to carbon emission, where this glass is made from abundant raw materials and is infinitely recyclable without any quality degradation. The toolkit examines various wine packaging forms, analyzing the carbon output of these packaging, further suggesting best practice examples with reliable sources and case studies.

Wine GB also said, “There is considerable improvement potential as using recycled glass can reduce emissions by up to 30%, although most bottles contain only a proportion of recycled glass.” Further, he concluded by saying that the heavily bottled usually attract criticism within the trade circle and often leads towards criticism like Janics Robinson MW publishing bottle weight alongside reviews
