DS Smith and BWT Partnered for an Innovative Sustainable Transport Box for MACH Water Filters

In July 2026, DS Smith and BWT (Best Water Technology) partnered for the manufacturing of a transport box especially for MACH water filters in two different versions. DS Smith, an international paper company, is also known as the global provider of fibre-based and sustainable packaging solutions, whereas BTS is a leading producer of water treatment technologies with solutions for households, commercial applications, and industrial environments across Austria.

The packaging solution designed in the partnership of two renowned brands is available in two different forms for different MACH water filters. The technology used in MACH water filters is also considered to be the next-generation automatic backwash filter for the protection of domestic water pipes. The main aim of the packaging is to protect the filters from any damage, improve logistical efficiency, and increase efficiency in materials utilization from production through to easy handling and transportation.

BWT MACH Backwash Filters

The well-renowned company manufactures a line of point-of-entry whole-house backwash filters. The MACH backwash filters protect domestic plumbing from suspended matter, sand, rust, and dirt. The technology involved in the manufacturing of such filters involves Rotary-Impulse-Backwash (RIB) or rotary pulse technology. It helps to clean the filter element without removing it, to ease the whole process. The cleaning procedure is automated and resource-efficient, and hence only takes four to five seconds through a simple 90-degree turn of a handle. All these systems use stainless steel mesh membranes and lead-free materials, which are helpful to maintain water hygiene and prevent bacterial build-up.

Enhanced Handling Operations

The manufacturing team of the companies partnered has cleverly crafted the solution to hold the MACH water filters, related accessories, and also the product-sensitive components securely in place. The core element of the design involves the integrated and triangular-shaped corrugated cardboard insert, which is helpful in creating a flexible accessory compartment. The core element is made from a dividing piece of material incorporated into the packaging structure.

The aim of the inserts is also to protect the BWT MACH filters from shock or a sudden, unexpected impact during the supply chain process. It helps to separate the products from the bottom of the packaging casement and elevate them to ensure that they are safe and above the floor level.

Aligned Production Process

The whole packaging involves a double-wall of corrugated cardboard. The material helps to form a rigid, durable, and strong structure, which is helpful to protect the product under any circumstances. The smart packaging design involves less use of material and is also a compact solution to effectively reduce the amount of space. Also, the transport box for MACH water filters in two different versions can be easily integrated into existing BWT packaging lines.
