Eco-Designed PET Trays from Indorama Ventures and AMB S.p.A. Target Europe’s Sustainable Packaging Demand

Indorama Ventures Public Co. Ltd. and AMB spa strengthened their collaboration and introduced an innovative recyclable PET multilayer tray designed to improve sustainability in food packaging applications. The development reflects the growing industry's focus on the economy and the need to balance performance with environmental responsibility.

The companies first announced their collaboration in August 2023. Indorama says the design matches food safety, optical clarity, and sealing performance that regulators require while substantially increasing recycled content and being recyclable after use.

The initiative focuses on an advanced multilayer tray design that strategically incorporates recycled PET (rPET) flakes within the core layer, while maintaining virgin, food-grade PET on the outer surfaces to ensure compliance with food safety and quality standards. This structure allows the packaging to deliver both high performance and enhanced sustainability, combining material circularity with the strength, clarity, and hygiene required for food applications.

Production of these fully recyclable PET trays has officially commenced at Indorama Ventures’ Verdun Recycling facility in France, marking a significant step in scaling up sustainable packaging solutions within the European market. The Verdun site plays a key role in supporting closed-loop recycling systems by transforming post-consumer PET into high-quality material suitable for food-contact applications.

According to Indorama Ventures, the new tray solution is aligned with upcoming regulatory and sustainability objectives across Europe, particularly the ambition to achieve an average of 30 percent recycled content in plastic packaging by 2030. By integrating recycled material into the tray’s core while preserving food-grade standards on the surface, the company is positioning itself to meet evolving compliance requirements and growing consumer demand for environmentally responsible packaging.

The multilayer tray protects the food product, extends shelf life, and reduces food waste. According to Jose-Antonio Alarcon, the technical manager of Petcore Europe's thermoforming working group, collecting 30% of PET trays in Europe for recycling makes effective recycling pathways for multilayer trays essential.

This approach is designed to retain necessary standards relating to food safety, clarity, and sealing, while increasing the proportion of recycled material. It proves that innovation and collaboration can unlock new recycling pathways, even for the most complex packaging waste streams.

Indorama Ventures Europe and Turkey CPET business director Andy Motta stated, “A scalable innovation like this enables the tray industry to maintain high performance while moving decisively toward Europe’s circular-economy ambitions.

According to the company, production of the new multilayer tray structure is active at Indorama Ventures’ Verdun recycling facility in France. Finished trays are being supplied to customers in the U.K., with broader European deployment underway. It reflects our commitment to solutions that strengthen recycling systems.
