New Stone Paper Box from Moyu Aims to Transform E-Commerce Packaging Sustainability

A Netherlands-based stationery company, Moyu, has launched a reusable stone-paper shipping box. The Stonepacker is designed to endure 25 uses, is fully recyclable, and can be returned nationwide through a deposit system in partnership with Boxo, a reusable packaging return program. According to the company, the solution aims to address disposable e-commerce packaging and cut down on single-use paper.

Roel Schatorjé, Moyu founder, expresses:

“We sometimes talk about one-time use plastics, but rarely about single-use cardboard, even though that also only lasts one usage. With the Stonepacker, everyone from online stores to customers can finally change to ecological friendly, reusable packing.”

The company clarifies that single-use cardboard boxes contribute significantly to paper waste and CO2 emissions. The manufacturing of Stonepacker does not use trees, water, or bleach and has a 94% reduction in carbon footprint compared to old-style paper products, according to Moyu.

Moyus stone paper is manufactured from limestone that is released during mining. It is ground down to produce calcium carbonate powder, which is then combined with recycled high-density polyethylene.

Boxo works a network of gathering points across the Netherlands. After customers receive a Stonepacker, they can drop the empty box at any Boxo location. Once the Stonepacker is skimmed at a Boxo collection point, the user accepts a €3.95 (US$4.6) deposit, which is automatically refunded. The box is then patterned, cleaned, and recycled. After around 25 uses, it is recycled into a new transport box.

Moyu points out that, since its extension into packaging, numerous organizations in retail, logistics, and e-commerce have advanced the company partnerships. “A large company inquired us: How come we didnt hear about this before? We are open to pilot projects and associations with frontrunners who want to mechanically decrease their packaging waste,” endures Schatorjé.

Moyu was founded in 2019. It aims to make the paper industry more sustainable with effaceable stonepaper. With over 380,000 employees and more than 2,500 business clients, it has saved millions of liters of water and reduced CO2 emissions.
