KHS Boosts Packaging Innovation with Plasmax Barrier Technology

Plasmax barrier technology uses a wafer-thin, transparent covering of silicon oxide, which is functional to the inner wall of the bottle, protecting the contents from oxidation. The barrier presentation is suitable for premium goods like green tea, which is very delicate in quality and has to meet the highest needs in markets such as Asia describes Philipp Langhammer, Product Manager Barrier Technology at KHS.

The technology initially established for pharmaceutical glass vessels is based on many years of research and development optimisation. The first Plasmax schemes were piloted in the food industry in the 2000s. Since then, KHS has additionally developed its Plasmax barrier and made it available in this
year to large-scale construction speeds of up to 60,000 bottles per hour without a cooperating shield.

Another benefit of Plasmax technology is its ecological friendliness. The glass layer is completely recyclable and can be eradicated in the recycling procedure using lye without distressing the resource quality of the PET. This differentiates it from chemical scavenger technologies, which make the recycling process more difficult. The coating is also completely compatible with recycled PET, which helps with the recyclability of the packaging. KHS will be offering the Supreme bottle at Interpack in Düsseldorf.

The benefits of PET bottles are obvious: they are light and indestructible. For some goods, however, these advantages are not enough. Because of the higher gas penetrability of classic PET containers, vitamins or carbon dioxide can be effortlessly lost. A supplementary resistance, such as in a glass bottle, for example, is needed to give the product appropriate protection.

With the Plasmax coating method, the properties of a glass bottle can be enhanced. These coated bottles are called FreshSafe PET® bottles, the insides of which are enclosed with an ultra-thin shielding layer of glass. Sensitive products, like beer, fruit juice, wine, ketchup, soft drinks, sauces, and various other liquid food products, are packaged in a way that their excellence, taste, and vitamin content are maintained and made to last longer.

Enhanced-quality, multiple-usage, barrier-coated PET bottles preserve the permeation of gases into goods, like the diffusion of oxygen, or the loss of carbon dioxide in the case of carbonated goods. Another benefit of Plasmax barrier coating is that the SiOx barrier is 100% transparent, and PET containers retain their crystal-clear appearance. In addition, one can completely recycle the coated bottles in the same way as pure PET, specifically bottle to bottle.
