Smurfit Westrock has shown ActiBlu™, which is a breakthrough prototype option planned to decrease the requirement for traditional glue lines in paper-based packaging, pointing a noteworthy step forward in efficiency, efficacy, and sustainability. ActiBlu is a glue applied through the manufacturing of the packaging, eliminating the necessity for glue usage when the box is bolted. It starts with a fine mist of water and closes directly.

ActiBlu was presented through the company’s 2026 Innovation Event in the Netherlands, which brought together around 450 consumers, partners, and innovation leaders from around multiple trades to discover the role of how artificial intelligence, sustainability, and planning are determining the future of paper-based packaging innovation.

Speaking at the event, Arco Berkenbosch, Chief Innovation Officer at Smurfit Westrock, expressed: “ActiBlu shortens the packing strategy for consumers. The shift to the solution needs modification from glue usage to squirting a fine fog of water on packing lines, decreasing functional complexity while preserving performance.”

Beyond efficacy, ActiBlu utilizes up to 60% less glue than conventional hot-melt gluing, helping brands’ sustainability aims and supporting to fulfil changing regulatory needs, comprising PPWR, through enhanced recyclability.

ActiBlu is now in the pilot segment with Smurfit Westrock operating intently with connections to test and fine-tune the option in functional surroundings, enhancing it further based on consumer feedback.

Smurfit Westrock’s 2026 Innovation Event also observed the outline of three industry-leading AI-founded tools, planned to enhance packing performance on shelves and across the distribution chain, all built on visions from millions of actual world market data points.

“This is about constructing a future that considers invention with liability: powered by people, driven by nature, and improved by AI,” expressed Berkenbosch. “By bringing human innovation, nature’s smartness, and progressive technology together, we’re creating options that are not only intelligent, but more sustainable and profound for a changing circle.”
