Tata Steel Nederland Introduces New Steel Grade for Packaging Applications

Tata Steel Nederland (TSN) has developed a dedicated new production line for packaging steel aimed at food-sector applications. A key feature of the project is the use of advanced Trivalent Chromium Coating Technology (TCCT), which significantly reduces the environmental impact of production while already meeting anticipated European regulatory requirements, particularly under REACH chemical regulations.

TSN is the developer and patent holder of TCCT technology. In addition to deploying it within its own operations, the company licenses the technology to other European steel producers, effectively setting a new benchmark for the packaging steel market across Europe.

A significant advantage of the new line is that the complete production procedure is concentrated in one location, which shortens logistics and shortens the supply chain. Combined with Protact’s solution polymer-coated packaging, steel TCCT confirms compliance with the strict food safety standards. Meanwhile, consumers no longer need to apply additional coatings to the resource, which decreases costs, cuts down on the usage of chemicals, and shortens production processes.

As per Arne Hoogerhorst, head of the Packaging division at Tata Steel Nederland, the new technology makes manufacturing safer for employees, reduces ecological risks, and supports consumers' transition to more effective and sustainable solutions.

It should be remembered that Tata Steel has signed a non-binding letter of intent (JLoI) with the Dutch government to shift to less-carbon steel production at its Eemhaven plant. The company's strategy to decrease releases at its plant in the country is part of a project that could cost €4-6.5 billion, with the state contributing €2 billion.

Tata Steel Nederland has custom-made a new manufacturing line for packaging steel. Utilizing our advanced TCCT technology (Trivalent Chromium Coating Technology), we generate packaging steel more sustainably and already comply with upcoming legislation. Tata Steel Nederland (TSN) is the limited developer of this invention and holds the patent. We also supply TCCT technology to other steel creators, setting the European standard for sustainable steel production.

Steel packing is not only sustainable and safe but also a recycling champion. In the Netherlands, more than 95% of packing steel is recycled into new steel from food cans to aerosol cans.
