Burts Snacks, a UK-based leading snacks manufacturer, has introduced a new environmentally friendly crisp packaging made with 55 % recycled plastic. The new packaging is expected to roll out across popular snack flavors during the English summer this year. Award-winning snack maker company uses post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic, which will make its shelf appearance across the South West.
The company has selected some best sellers like Mature Cheddar & Onion, Sea Salt & Malt Vinegar, and Devon Roast Beef to make a feature of the eco-conscious design in 40g and 150g sizes. The packaging will also feature a green flash as their commitment to sustainability.
The eco-friendly packaging adoption by the company is one of the highest PCT plastics achieved among UK-based companies. The company states that it will also help to save around 8,000 tonnes of virgin plastic.
Rikin Lakhani, the managing director of Burts Snacks, said,
“Over the past few years, we’ve carefully considered the different ways we can move to a more environmentally friendly packaging while keeping the same high-quality hand-cooked chips our customers know and love. The new PCR packaging will take used materials and incorporate them into new plastic, helping to create a circular economy and a happier environment. We know we have a way to go in terms of sustainability, but we’ve made some real strides recently and are constantly looking at how we can do better.”
The eco-friendly transition is also a major step towards adopting other sustainable improvements in recent times. It mainly includes reducing plastic film thickness, eliminating cardboard use by 10% and working with South West suppliers to support regional producers like South Devon Chilli Farm and Eversfield.
