LEGO Reaches Midway Milestone in Shift to Paper-Based Brick Packaging

The LEGO Group provided updates on its progress reports to date on its ongoing efforts to transform single-use plastic into a paper-based, eco-friendly material for packaging and LEGO sets. The progress states that almost half a per cent of packaging lines have adopted this change and are growing rapidly compared to the previous year. This consistency in the sustainable initiative is a huge contribution and dedication towards the sustainable packaging market.

The progress report update is building hope and confidence within the company to soon deliver eco-friendly quality bags, promising high-quality materials used in the operation, to every corner of the world.

In its recent update, the LEGO Group confirmed that almost 56% of its LEGO brick packaging lines have shifted from single-use plastic bags to paper-based bags, with 91% in Asia, 35% in the Americas, and 70% in Europe. The promotion and commercialization process is almost done in Vietnam and China. Further, the company is focusing on full-fledged execution in its other factories in Hungary by 2026, and in Mexico and the Czech Republic during 2027.

The company also added that it is speeding up the paper-based packing lines so the output can exceed that of the plastic packaging machines under replacement.

The update is connected to the company’s 2023 announcement to start classifying single-use plastic in LEGO boxes, following the replacement of the plastic pre-pack bags with paper-based new bags, starting in the Asia and Europe regions. The initiative builds the parts of a series and shifts in the company as it engines towards accomplishing its sustainability commitment journey.

This is a major goal of the company: to produce its products from sustainable materials or, if not, from recycled or renewable resources, leaving no waste behind by 2032. Also, the focus on meeting the net-zero emissions target throughout the value chain by 2050 and on mitigating carbon emissions by 37% in the coming years, based on 2019 levels of unfavorable pollutants, is empowering.

The R&D VP Packing and Packaging at the LEGO Group, Jesper Toubol, said, “We’re on an ongoing improvisation track. After the bags are commercialized, we’ll discover other effective ways to improve and continue making them. Further, we’re leaving a commendable experience for the families and children with these sustainable bags.
