Mondi, with the support of the full-line supplier Voith, initiated the start-up of its leading recycled containerboard paper machine in Duino, Italy. Mondi is a leading producer of robust, sustainable paper and packaging. Once the machine is fully operational and evaluated, it will produce around 420,000 tons of quality recycled containerboard annually.
The mill’s product portfolio includes waste-related fluting starting at 80 gsm, testliner from 90 gsm upward, and paper reels from 0.95 m to 3.35 m, produced on Mondi’s broadest recycled paper machine. COO at Mondi Containerboard, Klaus Peller, said, “The partnership with Voith’s brilliant team was trustworthy and smooth. I’m thankful for Voith’s full-fledged approach, which meaningfully reduced our interfaces. This enabled punctual commissioning, allowing us to enter Duino. The use of recent technologies promises production efficiency.”
Voith provided a customized solution that includes the BlueLine stock preparation system, a conversion of the existing machine to the robust, efficient XcelLine paper machine, including the clothing package and service agreements. The project also focused on reconfiguring the previous winders for processing containerboard.
Senior Vice President of Global Rebuilds at Voith, Martin Jauch, said, “We take no credit for completing this rebuild on time and meeting customer satisfaction. This milestone not only speaks volumes about our position in the industry, but it’s also a result of the valuable, long-term collaboration between Voith and Mondi. We’ll continue to stand strong by working with Mondi on-site, beyond the rebuild, to unlock the full potential of the new mill.”
The customized package encompasses the full end-to-end process from stock preparation to winding. The Voith solution improves resource utilization through efficient, effective production. The BlueLine stock preparation system delivers quality and consistency with low energy consumption and improved fiber yield. An IntensaPulper, along with the TwinPulp detrashing system, ensures smooth stock pulping. Voith’s champion is its InfiltraDisc filter for optimum drainage.
Alongside, the paper machine has been equipped with remarkable technologies, including a DuoFormer CBv shoe-blade former, a DuoCentri NipcoFlex press, a MasterJet Pro headbox, and a SpeedSizer AT for controlled film applications. MasterReel technology is designed for high-performance winding. The rebuild of the previous VariTop winder significantly increases the productivity and efficiency of the entire line process. This successful project partnership illustrates Voith’s reliability and excellence as a champion in full-line supply. With Mondi, Voith promotes sustainable and efficient paper production.
