Deliveroo is a multinational online food delivery platform founded by Greg Orlowski and Will Shu. Operating in 10 markets worldwide, the company is known for its on-demand delivery services across restaurants, groceries, pharmacies, and retail sectors. Deliveroo focuses on ensuring products reach consumers safely and efficiently. Amazon is a major investor in the company.
Deliveroo introduced its PLA-lined paperboard takeaway box. This box is special as it's designed by the Sheffield Hallam University students in the UK and created by Biopak. This is an eco-frien dly paper-based solution, and it can be dumped at the food waste area to introduce more compostable packaging where it's suitable and convenient. The lining of the box is made of plant-related content, and the brilliant design has discovered a new locking system.
This new box came into action due to the valuable collaboration between Sheffield Hallam University, Deliveroo, and Biopak. This is the power of three, since Deliveroo’s first-ever Sustainable Packaging Challenge in 2024. This challenge was for the students to engineer a takeaway box in such a manner that the food temperature is manipulated and there are no stains around the box. It should be a totally spillage-free box.
Learning this need for compostable packaging brings more value and respect to the converters who showed courage to start building green packaging. The vice president of Global Converting at Tipa Compostable Packaging, Gary Tee, said, “The contaminated organic waste and conventional labels are the hurdles of composting procedures.”
William Shaw and Josephine Cooper won this challenge, as both students introduced a sealing system with more layers to the cardboard, ensuring a super safe locking system to the box. With this winning moment. Deliveroo shed some light on the food-contaminated plastic, saying that most of the plastic packaging is not recyclable, which unlocks a hazardous end-of-life path.
The company is behind in keeping up with circularity with this changing innovation trend. The winners proved that sustainable packaging can be achieved, retaining the same quality and features as modern packaging, this time with more precision and green efforts.
Shaw and Cooper said, “To witness our designed solution at Deliveroo’s webstore as a live product feels great and satisfying. We aimed to make a locking system that can work in the real world. We feel that this design will prove how sustainable/compostable packaging can be cost-effective and functional.”
