Emerging Tech Developments and Innovation Offer Circular Solutions

Packagers are proceeding with the use of digital technologies to make their flexible plastic packaging solutions more sustainable. Meanwhile, software offers can allow packaging companies to acclimatize to ongoing growth through AI-supported systems. Traceability, efficacy, and sustainability chasing are key to enhancing the resource circularity of flexible plastics, as per the experts at Aicomp, Berlin Packaging, Constantia Flexibles, Coveris, and Henkel.

“In current years, we’ve observed enhanced demand for recyclable and compostable flexible plastics, influenced by customer awareness and supervisory pressure. There’s also a rising interest in monomaterial resolutions that simplify recycling,” Matthias Waltz, co-head of software resolutions at Aicomp, tells Packaging Insights.

“Aicomp brings over 25 years of experience in the packaging business and offers industry-specific resolutions across several packaging segments, comprising flexible packaging.”

He emphasizes that the software solution company VCPowerPack provides an intuitive goods configuration implement that is easily incorporated with the enterprise resource planning software S/4HANA by SAP. “This enables consumers to completely influence SAP’s abilities, enriched with industry knowledge.”

Achim Grefenstein, head of group R&D at Constantia Flexibles, says:

“Flexible packing is developing rapidly with inventions like monomaterial solutions utilizing Machine Direction Oriented PE and Bi-axially Oriented PE, which replace intricate multi-layer laminates without compromising performance, where our EcoLam variety is a prime example.”

Another main step forward is our HolyGrail 2.0 project, utilizing digital watermarks and near-infrared spectroscopy cataloging to enhance identification and separation of packaging, resulting in cleaner recycling streams and higher quality recyclates.”

Constantia Flexibles capitalizes on systems like Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers to cut emissions from printing and coating. The company expresses that beyond recyclability, smart features like RFID, QR codes, and digital printing permit traceability, customization, and waste decrease.

Waltz expressed how Aicomp’s resolutions can support the packaging industry in responding quickly to market variations, customize goods efficiently, and preserving compliance with changing standards.

Aicomp’s modern solution, Cubicus, is a great example of this change. It provides industry-precise product configuration as a cloud-based SaaS solution for packaging producers of all sizes,” he adds.

“Skill is the backbone of alteration in flexible packing. From innovative order entry to AI-supported engineering systems, digital equipment allows smarter, faster, and more sustainable construction.”
