Cold Seal Innovation from Henkel Enhances Performance of Barrier-Coated Paper Packaging

Henkel has introduced Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE, marking the first cold seal adhesive in its portfolio specifically developed for barrier-coated paper packaging. Designed to work effectively with barrier-coated paper substrates, the new solution enables the reliable production of recyclable packaging structures while delivering a secure seal without the need for heat activation. By eliminating heat during the sealing process, the product helps improve operational efficiency and supports manufacturers in transitioning toward more sustainable packaging formats.

Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE is particularly suited for applications in the snack and confectionery sectors, where cold seal technology is widely used for flow-wrap packaging, as well as for collection cards and other secondary packaging formats that traditionally relied on plastic-based structures. By offering a paper-based alternative with dependable sealing performance, Henkel is addressing growing market demand for environmentally responsible packaging solutions.

The new adhesive is part of Henkel’s “RE” range, a dedicated portfolio of adhesives and coatings developed to enable recycling-compatible packaging designs. This product family is focused on supporting circular economy goals by facilitating material recovery and promoting the efficient reuse of resources within the packaging value chain.

Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE offers a strong, permanent seal with adhesion properties and high-quality usage, even at high line speeds. The cold seal covering is press-ready, confirms stable usage on a wide variety of paper grammages, and claims ageing properties. It also stands typical of refugees from paper substrates, thus averting process-related variations in presentation. The product is well-matched with mechanical paper recycling.

The new solution provides a consistent cold sealing presentation on barrier-coated paper constructions with hassle-free processing on present high-speed lines. This is mainly significant in the snack, confectionery, and ice cream sectors, where packaging insides are sensitive to heat and the cold seal technology is indispensable. As sealing is attained without thermal exposure, good quality and aroma are conserved while the mechanical stress on the packaging resource remains negligible. When joined with a modern barrier process, this procedure produces useful, recycling-compatible paper constructions.

With Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE, Henkel offers attested cold seal performance on barrier-coated paper and, therefore, packaging options that fulfil the needs for a circular economy and the high demands for goods safety and procedure stability,” expressed Cagri Turkmen, market policy manager, flexible packaging at Henkel.

In the situation of the PPWR, recyclable paper packing is progressively gaining in planned importance. Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE directly pays to this approach, as this Cold Seal coating has been confirmed not to impair the recyclability of barrier-coated paper constructions. For brand owners and packaging producers, this complete resource recirculation generates a solid basis for fulfilling future regulatory needs and applying high-performance, ready-to-market packaging plans.
