At the Packaging Europe Sustainability Award 2025, Ecohelix, a leader in sustainable material innovation, won the Renewable Materials award in the Pre-Commercial category. This prestigious award is often called the ‘Nobel Prize’ of robust packaging sustainability, recognizing the significant potential of Ecohelix’s comprehensive WOODMER® Seal material. The Packaging Europe Sustainability Awards serve as a positive boost for developments and approaches that make a meaningful difference and bring new hope to the industry.
The event and innovation ramp was judged by an international, independent jury of 60 experts, comprising academia, sustainability organizations, and brand owners, who carefully evaluated each submission and ensured that every winning solution presents a rigorous, holistic view of environmental impact.
The award-winning Ecohelix WOODMER® Seal marks a significant advance in the sustainable packaging industry. This seal is a wood-based heat-seal coating designed to replace various non-renewable materials and fossil-based plastics, supporting flexible packaging. The WOODMER® Seal offers customers a high-performance, sustainable, and practical solution derived directly from residual wood streams. It provides a fully renewable material source for packaging, promoting sustainability.
It acts as a necessary barrier with properties and sealing capabilities vital for modern packaging, while enabling decarbonization by replacing fossil-based plastic coatings with a more sustainable solution. By integrating this material into the packaging process, customers will follow a path of progression, especially those who prioritize and focus on sustainability. The company sincerely feels honored and grateful to receive this award and also thanks Packaging Europe and the jury for recognizing and supporting true innovation.
Petri Oinonen, founder and CEO of Ecohelix, delivered an inspiring speech on stage, saying, “This award is proof of our relentless and serious work our team has invested into establishing a valuable, disruptive new material. Producing a bio-based quality performance option to fossil plastics is not that easy, but the belief and dedication our precious partners hold in testing and introducing the WOODMER® Seal to the competitive market has been crucial to our milestone journey.”
Petri added, “My heartfelt thanks are to the whole dedicated Ecohelix team, our investors and partners, as our joint mission is now stronger than ever. We are all set to accelerate the scale of this unique, transformative material and support industry to head towards a valuable circular and bio-based future.”
