SIG, a global packaging solutions provider, announced the launch of Australia’s first bag-in-box wine packaging that is recycle-ready. The Adelaide facility has manufactured and developed the packaging by collaborating with Hill-Smith Family Estates, Debortoli Wines, Calabria Family Wines, and Vinarchy.

It is a major step for SIG as it helps them build a bag-in-box innovation, aligning with the company’s ambition towards building a regenerative food packaging system. It also follows the introduction of a recycle-ready bag for water, which was introduced in the previous year.

Terra Recshield, a mono-material film design, comes with a formulated polymer structure that replaces the conventional multi-layer film, also containing aluminum. The new design is a key factor that has made the bag, carton, and tap recycle-ready.

The company also claims that the packaging meets the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines set by the Australian Packaging Covenant Organization (APCO). They also said that the packaging will support the National Packaging targets for 2025.

Adelaide’s R&D team has also developed the first wine tap made from light grey polymers, which makes it the first locally manufactured tap. It also helps in material recovery and improving the quality of recycled outputs.

Carmen Houston, ANZ Head of Marketing & Sustainability at SIG, said,

“SIG has been at the forefront of bag-in-box packaging globally, and this product continues our commitment to innovation and leadership in sustainable packaging solutions for our customers, consumers, and the planet.” He further added, “Working with APCO and our winery partners, we are bringing a recycle-ready solution to market that fits Australian recycling infrastructure while maintaining wine quality through the supply chain.”

Jason Spiteri, executive director at Hill-Smith, also said that they are pleased to contribute to the legacy innovation with the first recycle-ready bag-in-box packaging.

SIG is focused on developing further recycle-ready solutions for other foodservice and beverage products, with its plans for the future.
