Sonoco, a leading company specializing in industrial, healthcare, and protective packaging solutions, was accredited by the Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC). It is a huge breakthrough for the company as it recognises its social responsibility towards the environment.
The company joined PSC last year to match up its innovations by enhancing its sustainable business across the pet industry. The accreditation is given to the company that registers progress in environmental stewardship and transparent reporting.
Scott Byrne, the Vice President of Global Sustainability at Sonoco, said,
“As a packaging provider with more than a century of experience, we see the pet sector as a powerful opportunity to apply our sustainability expertise where it matters most to people, pets, and the planet.” He further added that “This recognition validates the work we’re doing to offer scalable, circular solutions that deliver on both performance and environmental responsibility.”
Sonoco has always been committed to balancing quality, recyclability, and freshness in its packaging solutions. The rigid paper containers feature up to 90% recycled fiber, which extends the shelf life by reducing the environmental impact. The prime example stands the ‘GreenCan’ solution, which has around 92-98% paper content and is also integrated with a paper lid. It is specially designed as an environmentally responsible option that maintains performance and protection.
The can is now being used in a wide range of pet food and treats. For example, DoggyLove, a German-based company, adopted it earlier as a sustainable solution for its company.
“Every step toward becoming a more sustainable packaging solutions provider must be informed by a clear vision,” says Sonoco President and CEO Howard Coker. “Our people are the driving force behind these initiatives and product innovations.”
The company has partnered with the Darlington County Humane Society to reshape the education in Hartsville, South Carolina, the origin of the company.
