Tetra Pak has been leading the way with its sustainable initiative and has now finally found a way to commercialize and promote it at the marketing stage, using Aseptic Packaging with the eco-friendly paper barrier. Tetra Pak, in partnership with Garcia Carrion, has revealed the use of sustainable paper-related barrier technology for juice packaging.
The innovation milestone in sustainable food packaging solutions represents a step closer to reducing dependence on fossil-based materials. The new packaging material is now in the market, promoting brands and innovation across various markets.
Tetra Pak’s paper-based barrier has replaced the previously popular aluminum foil layer used in the aseptic carton design. The eco-friendly paper-based barrier is bolstering the transition from fossil-based materials to renewable, lower-carbon alternatives that also mitigate packaging's carbon footprint.
Along with the other layers in the packaging, this paper-based barrier will serve as a shield against moisture, bacteria, light, and oxygen, providing adequate protection for food safety. The product’s survival depends highly on the packages with an aluminum foil layer.
The aseptic cartons, along with the new paper-based barrier, hold the potential to be collected, classified, and recycled at the recycling infrastructure. The pack is made of 80% paper, and its packaging bolsters its sustainability credentials. The merger of the sustainable paper-related barrier with plant-based polymers in packaging material coatings shifts the eco-friendly, renewable sources to a commendable 92%. This simultaneously reduces carbon emissions by 43%.
The president of Garcia Carrion, Don Jose, said, “We are excited to embark on a journey promoting sustainable packaging for the juice shelf. For more than a decade, Garcia Carrion has been dedicatedly to working towards innovation and prioritizing the environment.”
Vice President of Garcia Carrion, Fala Corujo said, “This innovation contributes to our mission to mitigate environmental impact while delivering the best quality products to our customers.”
This sustainable packaging solution represents a new, robust industrial application that aligns with its full-fledged sustainability strategy, recognized with the Factories of the Future Award 2024 for its commendable performance in the Circular and Sustainability Economy. Tetra Pak has long inspired many brands to adopt brilliant brand voice packaging, and now Garcia Carrion will experience sustainable integration into its dynamic strategy.
