Tetra Pak and Garcia Carrion Launch World’s First Paper-Based Barrier Juice Packaging

Tetra Pak, in partnership with Garcia Carrion, has introduced the world’s first aseptic juice carton with a paper-based barrier. This innovation replaces aluminum foil, increases renewable content, and significantly reduces carbon emissions, marking a major step forward in sustainable juice packaging.

World-First Paper-Based Barrier for Juice Packaging

Tetra Pak collaborated with Garcia Carrion to introduce the world’s first-ever utilization of its paper-based barrier technology for juice packaging. This innovation is advancing novel packaging material developments.

What is Tetra Pak’s Paper-Based Barrier? 

Tetra Pak’s paper-based barrier is a significant innovation in aseptic carton design, which uses to replace conventional aluminum foil layers with a paper-based barrier, renewable barriers, promotes a significant shift from dependence on fossil-based materials to low-carbon, renewable materials and reduces the carbon footprint occurring through packaging.

What is the World-First Aseptic Carton with Paper-Based Barrier for the Juices? 

The world-first aseptic carton with a paper-based barrier for the juice category is developed with up to 80% paper; the packaging reinforces its sustainability credentials. Together with Spanish beverage producer Garcia Carrion, Tetra Pak has launched the Tetra Brik Aseptic 200 ml Slim Lead carton featuring a paper-based barrier for juice, within the flagship Don Simon brand. This innovation has become the first juices promoting package worldwide to utilize the innovative barrier, and the first such package is being available in Spain. 

The aseptic carton with a paper-based barrier for juices is combined with plant-based polymer utilizes in the packaging materials coating, which steps toward renewable content to a remarkable 92%, and reduces the carbon emission by 43% than to an aseptic package with an aluminium foil layer and fossil-based polymers. This package has been verified by the Carbon Trust1.

Tetra Pak is offering sustainable innovations to scale within markets and categories by working closely with consumers, along with ensuring packaging have its proper functionality and quality, she added. 

For Garcia Carrion, this paper-based barrier for juice packaging solutions is reflecting a novel industrial application of its 360o sustainable strategies, being recognized with the Factories of the Future Award 2024 for Excellence in Sustainability and Circular Economy.
