BASF Introduced the Compostable Ecovio Portfolio

In May 2026, BASF launched a new compostable Ecovio range for flexible barrier packaging. The range is bio-based grades and offers tailored barrier performance. The range is integrated with existing manufacturing equipment and increases the development of high-transparency films.

Introduction to Compostable Ecovio Portfolio

The Ecovio portfolio includes biodegradable polymer EcoFlex and PLA. The portfolio is suitable for home and industrial composting. The platform offers grease, liquids, moisture, and oxygen barrier protection. The portfolio enhances the sustainability and is widely used across FMCG applications. The new portfolio is ideal for multi-layer and mono-layer structures. The bio-based content is present in the new portfolio up to 80%. The portfolio is ideal for food-contact applications, and the new toolbox consists of ready-to-use solutions. The portfolio offers high transparency and superior mechanical properties. The portfolio is considered biomass-balanced and offers high-performance barriers. It has excellent processability and is compatible with coating paper. It manufactures ultra-thin biaxially stretched films and offers superior sealing properties. It offers paper compatibility and has strong tear resistance. It offers food contact safety and is made from highly renewable content. It has excellent puncture resistance and is used across multiple industries.

The portfolio offers manufacturers greater design freedom and helps in producing high-performance packaging. The platform supports diverse EOL options, and ecovio recycling does not generate microplastics. The new portfolio develops barriers against packaging formats like sachets, boxes, pouches, and trays. The new portfolio is ideal for food products like salty snacks, chocolate bars, sauces, mayonnaise, fish, coffee, ice cream, meat, cereals, cheese, and ketchup.
